(Last Updated: April 16, 2020)
1. Ben Bredeson, SR, Michigan
Bredeson is as consistent as you’ll find from a guard, and as NFL ready as any interior offensive lineman in the class. A 4 year starter at Michigan, Bredeson followed up back-to-back all-conference 2nd team appearances with a first team appearance as a senior. He has an ideal frame for a guard, possesses ideal football IQ to recognize defensive schemes. His offensive line coaches rave about the way he plays. While Bredeson is very powerful and was great in pass protection in college, his lack of elite athleticism could hurt him when defending quick linemen, particularly on 3rd down passing situations. While he knows how to not get beat, this limits his upside and limits the schemes you can use him in.
2019 Stats
13 games, 3.5 years as a starter at LG, All-America 3rd Team, All-Big 10 1st Team
2. John Simpson, SR, Clemson
John Simpson was a key blocker for Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne at Clemson, excelling as a run blocker and showing good promise in pass protection. One of the few guards to possess above average physical traits in the class, Simpson combines extreme power with lighter than expected feet, and a knack for big hits. He has good height and length for the guard position, and has experience getting out on screen passes. Simpson is a pretty big boom-or-bust prospect, however, as he has a number of mental lapses that result in sloppy form, penalties, and delayed get off. If he can keep his head in the game for 4 quarters all season long, he should be a quality starter.
2019 Stats
14 games, 2 years as a starter at RG/LG, All-America 1st Team, All-ACC 1st Team
3. Robert Hunt, rSR, UL-Lafayette
Louisiana Lafayette is coming off their best season in the team’s history, and it all started up front. Robert Hunt is big, long, and has really good quickness for a guard. He has the length and experience to play be a swing tackle at the next level, but performed better at guard in his 4 years as a college starter. He’s been slowed since the midway point of the season with a nagging groin injury, and he will occasionally show sloppy footwork or get too tall in his blocks. Hunt does a good job of maintaining his block through the second level, and latches on to defenders effectively to help him in pass or run protection.
2019 Stats
7 games, 4 years as a starter at LG/RT, All-Sun Belt 1st Team
4. Netane Muti, rJR, Fresno State
Muti is a developmental prospect with solid athleticism and elite strength. While lower body and core strength are more important than upper body strength, Muti impressed with 44 reps, by far the most at the combine. Looking at traits alone, Muti has a claim for the top guard spot and a day 2 selection. Things get foggy when you look at the medical history, as he played only 3 games this past year, and only 19 games over his 4 seasons of college. The medical report will linger huge in how teams evaluate him. When he is on the field, he plays with a powerful upper body, fairly quick feet in pass protection, and looks the part of an NFL left guard.
2019 Stats
3 games, 3 years as a starter at LG/LT
5. Shane Lemieux, rSR, Oregon
Shane Lemieux is a coach’s dream. Through his four years starting at Oregon, Lemieux was a steady force at left guard, displaying rugged play and a high football IQ. He will settle right in to the same LG position in the NFL, where he’ll use his good hand fighting and upper body strength to knock defenders off course. Having started 54 games at the position in his career, he has gotten really good at mirroring interior rushers, anticipating stunts, and also ran faster than anticipated at the combine.
2019 Stats
14 games, 4 years as a starter at LG, All-America 2nd Team, All-Pac 12 2nd Team

Overall Opinion of the Guards
It is a very weak year for guards, as no one falls anywhere near my top 50 overall prospects. Still, guards are always undervalued due to the late round depth at the position and tendency for tackles to move inside, so it isn’t uncommon for late round players to turn into steady NFL linemen. The trend at the top of the class is longtime starters who are well coached and hard working, which persists throughout the later rounds. The few prospects with elite physical traits such as Muti, Kindley, and Simpson all have their own weaknesses. If you need an interior offensive lineman this offseason, it might be better to address it in free agency or by converting someone to guard.
