2023 NFL Draft QB Rankings

1. Bryce Young, QB, Alabama

Bryce Young NFL Draft

In 2021 Bryce Young did just about everything you could ever dream a quarterback could do, winning the Heisman Trophy as a first year starter (2nd college season). The stats were incredible, as was the tape showing his field vision, accuracy, and quick release. 2022 failed to see the same level of production, but it was far from a bad season as he boasted a 32-to-5 touchdown to interception ratio. The word you always hear with Bryce Young is “processing." His football IQ and ability to read defenses is extremely high for a 3rd year college QB, combined with good pocket mobility, great accuracy, and a quick release. The biggest knock on Bryce Young will always be his size (6’0" 195), but that’s become less important in recent years. He also will need to get the ball out much quicker at the next level.

2022 Stats

12 games: 3328 passing yards, 32 passing touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 64.5% completion rate, 8.8 yards per attempt, 185 rushing yards, 4 rushing touchdowns

2. CJ Stroud, QB, Ohio State

CJ Stroud NFL Draft

CJ Stroud also saw moderately worse stats in 2022, but the 3rd year player still put on a big enough performance to win Big10 Offensive Player of the Year. Other than size, the 6’3" 215 pound quarterback has a pretty similar list of strengths to Bryce Young. His ability to process defenses is very advanced, he hits the open man, and he has good mobility within the pocket. Despite good size and athleticism, Stroud has shown very little interest in running the football, and prefers to maneuver within the pocket. Despite better stats in 2021, Stroud actually looked more impressive to me in 2022. He was clearly more comfortable throwing into tight windows, and started putting a lot more heat behind his throws.

2022 Stats

13 games: 3688 passing yards, 41 passing touchdowns, 6 interceptions, 66.3% completion rate, 9.5 yards per attempt, 108 rushing yards, 0 rushing touchdowns

3. Anthony Richardson, QB, Florida

Anthony Richardson NFL Draft

Anthony Richardson is the perfect example of a boom-or-bust prospect, but I really wish he stayed in college another year. At 6’4" 240 pounds with a very strong arm and truly elite athleticism, Richardson has the next level physical traits that you associate with Josh Allen or prime Cam Newton. The problem is that he’s probably two years out from being able to see the field without ruining everyone’s confidence in him. His accuracy and ability to read defenses is so poor right now that he won’t be ready to see the field any time soon without a very gimmick-y, QB run heavy system. Almost all his throws are to receivers who are standing still, and he’s shown no ability to throw receivers open. If the right team drafts and develops him, however, he has all the traits to turn into an MVP. But the odds of that are low.

2022 Stats

12 games: 2549 passing yards, 17 passing touchdowns, 9 interceptions, 53.8% completion rate, 7.8 yards per attempt, 654 rushing yards, 9 rushing touchdowns

4. Will Levis, QB, Kentucky

Will Levis NFL Draft

Levis doesn’t put up big numbers, but he has a massive arm with a strong frame (6’3" 230) and good athleticism, while playing in a pro-style system in the SEC. Other than his running game, Levis didn’t have much to work with this past year. A poor pass-blocking offensive line resulted in -200 rushing yards on the season (sack yardage counts as negative rushing in college), with little production from his receivers. He has a quick and natural throwing motion and isn’t afraid to stand in the pocket and take a hit. The interception rate was concerning this past year, with 1 interception for every 28.3 pass attempts. The physical traits are impressive, but he’ll need to take much better care of the football and learn to put more touch on his passes.

2022 Stats

11 games: 2406 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, 10 interceptions, 65.4% completion rate, 8.5 yards per attempt, negative rushing yardage, 2 rushing touchdowns

5. Hendon Hooker, QB, Tennessee

Hendon Hooker NFL Draft

Hendon Hooker was a Heisman favorite before tearing his ACL late in the season. The 6th year senior is tall (6’4" 215) with good open field speed, but his ability to launch it deep from the pocket while still taking care of the football is what’s most impressive. Since joining Tennessee in 2021, Hendon Hooker threw for 58 touchdowns, with only 5 interceptions, while averaging 9.6 yards per pass attempt and 69% completions. The offensive system and impressive playmaking talent around him helped, but you could say the same for Young and Stroud at the top of the class. He has plenty of accuracy and arm strength for the NFL, and the production is undeniable. The main knocks will obviously be his recent ACL injured, along with his age compared to the other top prospects, and ability to read the defense and run an offense playing from under center.

2022 Stats

11 games: 3135 passing yards, 27 passing touchdowns, 2 interceptions, 69.6% completion rate, 9.5 yards per attempt, 430 rushing yards, 5 rushing touchdowns

Overall Opinion of the QBs

The 2023 quarterback draft class has soon big names at the top, but it thins out fairly quick. A few small school guys like Tyson Bagent and Lindsey Scott has risen the ranks to improve the depth, but it’s never going to be a deep group. All eyes are instead focused on the top names: Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Will Levis, Anthony Richardson, and Hendon Hooker. Each of those 6 players have legitimate high level starting potential, but none are without faults. In fact several of them have very high bust potential, making this is a difficult class to put a label on.
