2023 NFL Draft OT Rankings

1. Paris Johnson, LT, Ohio State

Paris Johnson NFL Draft

Paris Johnson is a long, athletic left tackle with prototypical traits to dominate in the NFL. The 6’6" 310 pound lineman started as a guard in 2021, but saw few problems moving to the blindside tackle this past season. Johnson shows ideal flexibility, maintains a wide base, and continually improved his footwork over the course of the season. He gets out of his stance really fast, and consistently wins at the point of attack. While he’s probably better in the run game than the pass game, Johnson has shown impressive levels of improvement throughout his 3 seasons, and coaches rave about his leadership, work ethic, and intelligence. The traits are all there for a long career as an offensive tackle, he just needs to avoid ducking his head and become more consistent in his sets.

2022 Stats

12 games, 757 snaps: Allowed 9 QB hurries, 0 QB hits, 2 sacks

2. Peter Skoronski, LT, Northwestern

Peter Skoronski NFL Draft

Peter Skoronski was generally considered the top offensive lineman in college football this past season, and turned in an All-American campaign as a junior in 2022. Skoronski took over as a starter as a true freshman in 2020 and never missed a beat. He was solid each of his first two seasons before taking a major step this past year, showing an improved ability to recognize stunts. Skoronski dominates both as a run blocker and a pass blocker, with a firm anchor, strong hands, and an ability to open up big holes in the run game. His athleticism and flexibility are obvious on film, and he has a high football IQ. The glaring issue for Skoronski is his length, as his 32" arms don’t meet the traditional threshold of an NFL tackle. Many teams project him to move to the guard spot, which he never played in college.

2022 Stats

12 games, 881 snaps: Allowed 3 QB hurries, 2 QB hits, 1 sack

3. Broderick Jones, LT, Georgia

Broderick Jones NFL Draft

Jones is a very long and powerful prospect who has primarily played left tackle for the national champion Georgia Bulldogs. He measured in taller than expected at the combine, and showed some of the best overall athletic traits in the class. On film you’ll immediately notice his wide base in pass protection and explosion out of his stance in the run game. He has light feet in pass pro and holds his anchor fairly well, and he finishes his blocks effectively. He’s still pretty inexperienced having only been a starter for 1 1/2 seasons, and his technique still has room for improvement. But the overall athletic traits will translate very well to being an NFL tackle.

2022 Stats

13 games, 805 snaps: Allowed 8 QB hurries, 1 QB hit, 0 sacks

4. Darnell Wright, RT, Tennessee

Darnell Wright NFL Draft

Darnell Wright was one of the top high school recruits in the nation back in 2020, and he started right away as a true freshman. In his first two seasons, Wright alternated between the two tackle positions and lacked much consistency. The physical traits were there, but he struggled with his technique and balance. This past season, Wright settled in at right tackle and turned in a dominate campaign. He allowed 0 sacks and just 5 hurries across his 12 starts, displaying significantly better instincts and less unnecessary lunges. Wright has a very wide base and is difficult to move, standing 6’6" 340 pounds. He has good foot speed for someone of his size, along with a very strong anchor and surprisingly good knee bend and overall flexibility. Wright opens up holes in the run game and is fully able to block on the run. His wide frame with slow his ability to flip his hips, so he’ll need to be prepared for some of the quicker edge rushers in the NFL.

2022 Stats

12 games, 829  snaps: Allowed 5 QB hurries, 2 QB hits, 0 sacks

5. Dawand Jones, RT, Ohio State

Dawand Jones NFL Draft

Dawand Jones is a massive right tackle prospect at 6’8" 375 pounds, and would enter the NFL with the longest wingspan in the league at 7’5". His wide base is almost impossible to get around, and he has a dangerous punch to basically disorient pass rushers. Jones opens up massive holes in the run game and isn’t afraid to finish his blocks. For someone of his size he has surprisingly very quick feet, and is very effective blocking in space against smaller defenders. He wasn’t called for many holding penalties throughout his career despite arms that could easily bearhug most defenders. He’s shown good anticipation dealing with blitz packages, and has enough athleticism to do things most 6’8" offensive linemen can’t.

2022 Stats

11 games, 693 snaps: Allowed 4 QB hurries, 0 QB hits, 0 sacks

Overall Opinion of the OTs

I really like the top of the 2023 offensive tackle draft class, but the depth thins out pretty fast, and it’s particularly weak in the middle rounds. There’s a fair mix of right tackles and left tackles in the top 2 rounds of the draft, but teams looking for a true right tackle will likely need to jump on Darnell Wright or Dawand Jones early, as the group is especially thin in the middle rounds. A lot was learned about the offensive tackle class during the Senior Bowl, which had potentially their best group of offensive linemen to date. While I like the players at the top of the class, I can’t say it’s any stronger than the average year. The depth in day 3 is also below average, with a fairly weak showing in the 4th/5th round.
