Davin Vann NFL Draft Scouting Report

Davin Vann NFL Draft Scouting Report

Davin Vann is one of the most interesting prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft, and potentially the most underrated defensive prospect in the draft leading up to the combine.

Let me save you the suspense, once the combine comes Vann won’t be underrated anymore.

Despite not fitting perfectly into a defensive tackle or edge rusher position, Vann has been one of the most disruptive players in college football over the past few seasons.

The 5th year senior has gotten better each season, with explosive physical traits that will help him continue that success in the NFL.

While Vann has received NFL attention for the better part of two seasons, media scouts haven’t figured out how good he actually is.

Davin Vann NFL Draft Profile Overview

Davin Vann was a multi-sport star at Cary High School in Cary, North Carolina, a large suburb of Raleigh.

Alongside a dominant football career, Vann was also a state champion heavyweight wrestler and championship contender as a shot put thrower. As a junior in high school, his max discus throw places third in the entire country.

Cary HS is far from a football powerhouse, likely contributing to Vann not receiving the recruiting attention he deserved. Vann only received two power conference offers out of high school, one being from NC State.

Time will tell if NFL teams make the same mistake that college teams made by skipping on him.

After starting his college career at NC State in 2020, it didn’t take very long for Vann to start making an impact. By his redshirt freshman season he worked his way into the starting lineup, and never turned back.

Vann seemed to make plays when it mattered most, including big sacks against the big dogs of the ACC like Clemson, Miami, Florida State, and North Carolina.

By his sophomore season in 2022, the team accolades started rolling in. Vann earned the Wolfpack’s Alpha Rising Award, along with the Carey Brewbaker Award for best defensive linemen.

In 2023 he became an All-Conference player and was awarded with the #1 jersey, given annually to the player who exemplifies elite work ethic, training habits, and leadership.

Now in 2024, Vann has continued to improve his game. He posted a career high in sacks and tackles for loss, while leading the nation with SIX forced fumbles.

Vann plays with incredible strength that greatly exceeds his frame, and has the speed to consistently disrupt plays.

Prior to the season he made headlines by appearing in the top 10 of Bruce Feldman’s annual Freaks List, who noted Vann has 4.69 40 yard dash, can bench 440 pounds, squat 580, and has recorded 31 bench reps of 225 pounds.

Assuming he’s close to those numbers at the combine, he’ll skyrocket up draft boards.

The best part with Vann is that he’s more than just the athletic traits. Vann does a great job with his hands and eyes, keeping his eyes in the backfield and putting himself in the best position to easily separate from his blocker.

While his lack of height or length will make that more difficult at the next level, his attention to detail in his technique, full-body strength, and relentless motor will allow him to succeed.

Davin Vann is a refined draft prospect who will be NFL ready as soon as he’s drafted. While his lack of length will hurt him, his explosiveness and technique will allow him to exceed his draft position if he’s drafted by a system that can take advantage of his strengths.

If he can prove he can avoid being pushed out of his lane in the run game, Vann will have a long and disruptive NFL career as a pass rusher.
