NFL Draft defensive tackle rankings 2019

1. Quinnen Williams, rSO, Alabama

Quinnen Williams NFL Draft

Quinnen Williams entered the year with some potential, but since then has had an incredible climb up draft boards. The 6’4" 303 pound defensive lineman has famously been described as being “like blocking a 300 pound bar of soap" because of how hard he is to grab. Quinnen has an elite first step for his size, and an incredible motor. 71 tackles from the interior d-line position is extremely rare, especially on a defense with consistent talent. He is equally great against the run and pass, can makes plays through double teams, and never gives up on a play. Not only was he the most productive pass rusher at the position, he was also the best run stopper in the nation.

2018 Stats

15 games, 71 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, 8 sacks

2. Ed Oliver, JR, Houston

Ed Oliver NFL Draft

Ed Oliver has been highly hypes since high school. While he lacks elite size for the position, his athleticism is top notch, having clocked a 4.73 40 yard dash at his pro day. The 1st team All-American struggled a bit this past year which might worry some teams, but his 2017 tape is exceptional. Oliver bends exceptionally well and is very quick around the edge or up the middle. He won’t always be a disruptor in the run game, but he makes some big plays there as well. He’ll need to get back to his 2017 form to perform up to his rating.

2018 Stats

8 games: 54 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 3 sacks

3. Jeffery Simmons, JR, Mississippi State

Name NFL Draft

Simmons might fall a bit on draft day because he’s recovering from a late season ACL tear. If it weren’t for the injury and the exceptional defensive tackle class this year, he would be a top-5 pick in most drafts. Simmons has good size at 6’4" 300 pounds, above-average athleticism, and powers into the backfield to stop runners for a loss. Simmons also has a really good motor and will make tackles all over the field, having recorded 63 total tackles and 18 tackles for loss. Assuming he’s able to recover fully, he should dominate as a run stuffer.

2018 Stats

13 games: 63 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 2 sacks

4. Christian Wilkins, SR, Clemson

Name NFL Draft

Christian Wilkins does everything, and many years would be the top defensive tackle available. Not only has he been incredibly productive for a great team, he also is a phenomenal leader and very intelligent on and off the field. His athleticism is impressive, especially his flexibility, ability to bend, and quick reaction time. Wilkins gets all over the field to make tackles, is disruptive against the run, and gets a lot of QB pressures. As a 3-time All-American, Wilkins is experienced and NFL ready.

2018 Stats

15 games, 51 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks

5. Dexter Lawrence, JR, Clemson

Dexter Lawrence NFL Draft

Dexter Lawrence is a huge defensive lineman, measuring over 6’4" and weighing 342 pounds. The nose tackle ran the 40 in 5.05 seconds, which showcases incredible athleticism and foot speed for his size. He also led all defensive tackles with 36 bench reps, and matches his upper body strength with a thick lower body. While he got suspended for the CFP, all accounts are he isn’t a distraction off the field. Lawrence is a presence in the run game causing teams to plan around him, although he doesn’t always get in the backfield. Often times he can just be a space eater.

2018 Stats

13 games: 36 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks

Overall Opinion of the Defensive Tackles

A lot has been made of this defensive tackle group, and they won’t disappoint. There are absolute superstars at the top with Quinnen Williams, Ed Oliver, the Clemson duo, etc., and there is also great depth. In most drafts, guys like Jerry Tillery, Khalen Saunders, and Dre’Mont Jones would be getting first round considerations, yet they aren’t even near the top. An all around incredible class, including defensive linemen who can play in any system. Expect them to live up to the hype. Quinnen Williams in particular might be the best all-around player in the draft, which I have never before said about a defensive tackle.
