Complete NFL Draft Rankings Promo

1. Jared Verse, Florida State

DE | 6’4″ | 254 lbs | 4th Year

Jared Verse likely would have been a 1st round pick last year, but surprisingly decided to return to Florida State for one final season. The Albany transfer had absolutely no issues moving up in competition, showcasing consistent disruption as a pass rusher and run defender. Verse has prototypical size as a 4-3 defensive end, with a well proportioned frame, good length, and a very strong burst off the line of scrimmage. He accelerates into his hits and rarely ever misses tackles, and has the bend and flexibility to consistently win around the edge.

Verse has the strength to be an absolute bully on the field, and is one of the 2-3 edge rushers in this class who are truly NFL ready.

Jared Verse 2023 Stats

13 games: 41 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 9.0 sacks, 3 passes defender, 1 fumble forced

2. Dallas Turner, Alabama

OLB | 6’3″ | 247 lbs | 3rd Year

A former 5-star recruit, Dallas Turner was a dominant force from day 1 for the Crimson Tide. He’s a perfect fit for a 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL, but also has the frame to add more healthy weight and play a 4-3 defensive end. He has elite athletic traits, with impressive flexibility, acceleration, and powerful hands. He has really good length and solid instincts to identify plays.

Turner needs to be more consistent with his technique and develop better pass rush moves, but he has the traits necessary to excel in the NFL and took a step in the right direction this past season.

Dallas Turner 2023 Stats

14 games: 53 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 10.0 sacks, 1 pass defended, 2 fumbles forced

3. Laiatu Latu, UCLA

OLB/DE | 6’5″ | 259 lbs | 5th Year

Laiatu Latu is a powerful defensive end with perfect schematic versatility who will be highly sought after due to his pass rushing technique, aggression, and strength. Latu dominates with his hands and powerful core, leading to one of the highest pass rush win rates in college football. Latu has plenty of size to develop as an above-average run defender once he improves his leverage and limits his occasional over-pursuits. His ability to win on counter moves in his pass rush are the absolute best in the class.

Teams will likely look very close at his neck injury from a few years back which was originally believed to be career-ending.

Laiatu Latu 2023 Stats

12 games: 49 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, 13.0 sacks, 4 passes defended, 2 interceptions, 2 fumbles forced

4. Chop Robinson, Penn State

DE | 6’3″ | 254 lbs | 3rd Year

Chop Robinson was one of the most efficient pass rushers in college football in 2022 despite only being a true sophomore. He has elite acceleration and hits hard, while having advanced pass rushing ability to consistently win going through or around offensive tackles. He still has room to add strength to his frame, but his explosive athleticism makes up for it early in his career. Chop had the opportunity to excel in a bigger role in 2023, but it didn’t happen. Some nagging injuries definitely slowed his season, but it’s hard to justify a 1st round edge rusher having only 15 total tackles in a 10 game season.

Despite being raw, edge rusher is a traits-first position. And Chop has the traits.

Chop Robinson 2023 Stats

10 games: 15 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, 1 pass defended, 2 fumbles forced

5. Bralen Trice, Washington

DE | 6’4″ | 245 lbs | 5th Year

Bralen Trice is a prototypical 4-3 defensive end in terms of size (6’4″ 250), with enough athletic ability to be productive at the next level. While he’s not as twitchy or flexible as you’d expect from a high-level defensive end of production, he shows good strength, balance, and an ability to win with leverage.

The most impressive thing for Trice is his consistently elite disruption. Trice led Power 5 EACH of the last two years in QB pressures, totaling 70 each season. He is also valuable against the run, doing a good job of consistently setting the edge and playing within the scheme.

Bralen Trice 2023 Stats

15 games: 49 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks, 2 passes defended, 1 fumble forced

Traits That Make an Edge Rusher Prospect Great

Edge rusher is likely the most important position in the game outside of quarterback. Being an elite edge rusher prospect requires a rare blend of elite physical traits. Quickness, bend, arm length, and strength are just a few of these traits.

Some of the factors we consider when scouting are included below.

Flexibility

No edge rusher is going to be highly touted if they aren’t good at bending around the edge, quickly flipping their hips, staying on their toes, and redirecting to chase down ball carriers. Edge rushers need to react quickly and remain coordinated, while having the uncoachable traits to beat tackles 1-on-1.

Burst

Having a quick yet powerful burst off the line of scrimmage is vital for pass rushers. If you’re able to beat the offensive lineman to his spot, you’ll get in the backfield consistently and disrupt a lot of plays. Having a burst is a lot more than just playing with a high motor, you need innate athletic talent.

Power

Being an edge rusher isn’t all about the pass rush, it’s also about setting the edge in the run game. For that, you need a lot of power. Holding up against double teams blocks from offensive linemen who are bigger than you, or even pushing them into the backfield to disrupt running lanes is a top trait for defensive ends and outside linebackers.

Length

A big part of being an edge rusher is disrupting plays even if you aren’t making a tackle for loss. Length is the best way to do that. It will help setting the edge, knocking down passes at the line of scrimmage, and slowing down or tackling running backs through a tight lane.

Overall Opinion of the 2024 Edge Class

While I’m a fan of the top few edge rushers in the 2024 draft, the depth is exceptionally poor. Pass rush is a popular position and more have been getting drafted in recent years, but we might see a decline this season. Unless you get one of the top talents, there seems to be a pretty strict drop off. Edge rushers drafted in the middle rounds will almost certainly be reaches well beyond their value.
