1. Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State

WR | 6’3″ | 209 lbs | 3rd Year

Marvin Harrison Jr is a big receiver with Hall of Fame bloodlines who is dominant at the catch point. He has the frame and athleticism to elevate over defenders or fight through the body to attack the ball in the air and secure contested catches. But he’s a lot more than just a contested catch maker, as he has a great feel for his route running, good instincts, and an overall feel for finding the best way to counter a defense. He’s solid after the catch, and has enough speed, quickness, and body control to create separation.

He’s been a part of some of the best receiver rooms in football, and still found a way to quickly become the clear WR1 for Ohio State. He dominated the best corners he faced throughout the season, and looked every part of a top 5 overall selection.

Marvin Harrison Jr. 2023 Stats

12 games: 1211 receiving yards, 14 receiving touchdowns, 18.1 yards per catch, 34.6% receiving yardage share, 26 rushing yards, 1 rushing touchdown

2. Malik Nabers, LSU

WR | 6’0″ | 199 lbs | 3rd Year

Malik Nabers has consistently improved throughout his LSU career, and is a dangerous threat with the ball in his hands. He gets good separation on short routes and has improved his route tree, while showing great start-and-stop ability. The body control and hands stand out on film, and he’s experienced lining up all over the field.

Nabers has explosive overall athleticism and a relatively sturdy build, with plenty of versatility to fit into a variety of systems. He’s continued to improve each year and has all the traits you look for in a WR1.

Malik Nabers 2023 Stats

13 games: 1569 receiving yards, 14 receiving touchdowns, 17.6 yards per catch, 35.6% receiving yardage share, 1 rushing yard

3. Rome Odunze, Washington

WR | 6’3″ | 212 lbs | 4th Year

Rome Odunze had a breakout 2022 season, and had a chance to be a top-50 pick had he entered the draft last season. He decided to return for one more year and continue to grow as a receiver. Odunze is a true outside WR prospect who constantly plays hard. He never gets tackled easily, always fighting for extra yardage. He does the little things like blocking and special teams, and is a threat on deep balls or mid level throws. He’s got a very big frame with a large catch radius, and has improved at attacking the ball in the air.

Odunze is a very solid athlete, and will solidify himself as a potential top-10 pick if he runs as fast as he expects to at the combine or his pro day.

Rome Odunze 2023 Stats

15 games: 1640 receiving yards, 13 receiving touchdowns, 17.8 yards per catch, 31.8% receiving yardage share, 37 rushing yards, 1 rushing touchdown

4. Brian Thomas, LSU

WR | 6’3″ | 209 lbs | 3rd Year

Thomas is yet another big bodied wide receiver who excels at stretching the field deep with his athletic ability and length. At 6’3″+ 210 pounds, Thomas has legitimate size and is still growing into his frame. He gets off the line of scrimmage fast and was reliable catching the ball.

Despite leading the FBS in receiving touchdowns this year, he is definitely more raw than the 3 receivers at the top of the class. His aggressiveness fighting back to the ball is inconsistent, and he doesn’t have a very wide route tree. There’s no reason to believe he can’t improve these traits, but he likely won’t be able to step in and replicate his touchdown production he saw in college. Regardless, receivers with Thomas’ mix of physical traits won’t last past the first round very often.

Brian Thomas 2023 Stats

13 games: 1177 receiving yards, 17 receiving touchdowns, 17.3 yards per catch, 26.7% receiving yardage share, -6 rushing yards

5. Adonai Mitchell, Texas

WR | 6’2″ | 205 lbs | 3rd Year

Adonai Mitchell has some of the freakist physical traits in the draft. A big bodied receiver with sub-4.4 speed, a big catch radius, and the ability to secure contested catches. Mitchell has a fairly refined route tree and is much more than just an athletic prospect. After disappointing in his final season at Georgia in 2022, he turned it on alongside Xavier Worthy at Texas this past season. The duo were as dangerous as any receiver group in the nation.

The biggest thing for Mitchell is staying consistently engaged throughout the game and not taking any plays off. He has all the physical talent, but he’ll need to show a high level motor to become an effective WR1 in the NFL.

Adonai Mitchell 2023 Stats

14 games: 845 receiving yards, 11 receiving touchdowns, 15.4 yards per catch, 20.9% receiving yardage share, 1 rushing yard

MORE NFL DRAFT RANKINGS

Traits That Make a WR Prospect Great

As one of the primary playmaking positions, wide receiver is one of the most fun groups to scout. Quickness, route running, and the ability to secure contested catches are among some of the most important factors of scouting the top wide receiver prospects.

Some of the factors we consider when scouting are included below.

Separation Ability

If you’re not consistently getting open, you’re not going to be a top draft prospect as a wide receiver. Route running and getting separation relies on a variety of traits, but players who have an ability to get themselves open without needing an offensive scheme have a ton of value to NFL offenses.

Hands

At the end of the day, there’s no point in getting open if you can’t catch the ball. Having natural hands, avoiding body catches, attacking the ball at the catch point, and completing catches through contact all make for a natural wide receiver.

Quickness

Quickness helps with separation, but it’s also a big aspect of playmaking. We’ve seen in a number of dominant NFL receivers who are quick on the field, but not necessarily fast. This includes Davante Adams, Cooper Kupp, DeAndre Hopkins, and more. While you’d love a straight line burner, quickness outperforms straight speed.

Play Strength

While you don’t need to put up 30 reps on the bench press, having solid core strength and the ability to play through contact is necessary for NFL success. A lot of thinner draft prospects struggle getting to the NFL when they’re constantly jammed at the line of scrimmage. Better play strength, less effect from successful press coverage.

Overall Opinion of the 2024 WR Class

This is a very solid wide receiver draft class, led by an elite prospect in Marvin Harrison Jr. But this isn’t just a one man show, as there’s great depth with over 30 players currently having a draftable grade. The class features more tall receivers than normal, and the large number of transfers created a ton of storylines to watch throughout the 2023 season.
