1. Jer’Zhan Newton, Illinois

DT | 6’2″ | 304 lbs | 4th Year

Jer’Zhan Newton is incredibly quick with a high motor and elite pass rushing moves. He’s the gold standard of interior pass rush in college football this season, with a low center of gravity and full body strength that helps him compensate for his below-average length. Newton has good bend and very strong hands, and does a great job of getting sideline to sideline from his interior defensive line position.

Even though some teams may not like his size, Newton is as dangerous as any d-lineman in the draft.

Jer’Zhan Newton 2023 Stats

12 games: 52 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, 2 passes defended, 1 fumble forced

2. Byron Murphy II, Texas

DT | 6’1″ | 297 lbs | 3rd Year

Byron Murphy is a short yet sturdy ball of muscle with a quick get-off from the line of scrimmage and an impressive array of pass rushing moves for a 3rd year player. Murphy’s stats won’t just off the page, but he was the most consistent disruptor for the Texas Longhorns who boasted the deepest defensive line in CFB this past year.

Murphy plays very strong and doesn’t often get swallowed up in the run game, while having impressive flexibility and an ability to get underneath blockers. While his overall size isn’t ideal, Murphy is a great athlete with impressive instincts and plenty of talent.

Byron Murphy 2023 Stats

14 games: 29 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks

3. Darius Robinson, Missouri

DT/DE | 6’5″ | 285 lbs | 5th Year

Darius Robinson’s stock exploded at the Senior Bowl, and I’m a bit embarrassed I was on him earlier in the evaluation process. At 6’5″ 290 pounds, Robinson is a bit of a tweener in terms of size. But watching him up close, you’ll notice that he’s a tweener in the best possible way. He has plenty of power to play inside, and incredible twitch to stick outside as an edge rusher.

Robinson had an incredibly productive year, earning 1st Team All-SEC. Prior to 2023, Robinson was primarily used as an interior d-lineman in a 4-3 scheme and didn’t show as much success. Finding the right system will be critical to maximizing his athletic potential.

Darius Robinson 2023 Stats

12 games: 43 tackles, 14.0 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, 1 fumble forced

4. Kris Jenkins, Michigan

DT | 6’3″ | 299 lbs | 4th Year

Kris Jenkins is a big time athlete who shows it on the field. The son of an NFL star, Jenkins has managed to become stronger and more athletic throughout his Michigan career. He gets sideline to sideline as well as any defensive linemen in the class, and has an impressive mix of speed and power. He’s considered the freakiest athlete on an absolutely loaded Michigan roster, and has the opportunity to be featured more prominently from the interior this year. While the physical traits look great, he hasn’t shown much of any interior penetration.

He’ll need to improve his rush moves to solidify himself as a 1st round pick.

Kris Jenkins 2023 Stats

15 games: 37 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 1 pass defended, 1 interception

5. Braden Fiske, Florida State

DT | 6’4″ | 292 lbs | 6th Year

Braden Fiske was one of the most dominant interior pass rushers in all of college football during his time at Western Michigan, and a transfer to Florida State didn’t slow him down. Fiske consistently won with his quickness off the line and ability to dip below offensive lineman. His flexibility allows him to take angles and beat blockers in ways you wouldn’t expect from a 6’4″ defensive lineman.

He’s as twitched up as any DL in the class, and he showed it at the combine where he dominated field workouts and had the fastest 40 time of his group. While teams will be worried about his lack of length, he makes up for it with his quickness and pass rush moves.

Braden Fiske 2023 Stats

13 games: 43 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks

Traits That Make a DT Prospect Great

Interior defensive linemen don’t always put up glamorous stats, but they play pinnacle roles on every defense. Power, lateral quickness, explosion, and flexibility in the core/lower body are among some of the most important factors of scouting the top defensive line prospects.

Some of the factors we consider when scouting are included below.

Power

Having a powerful frame can’t be overlooked in defensive tackle rankings. A great d-lineman will be able fill their gap defensively without getting pushed off, while also disrupting offensive linemen with power moves. Power can help in pass rush, but is a necessity for plugging up holes against the run.

Lateral Quickness

Not all running plays go right up the middle, and the quarterback doesn’t always stay still in the pocket on pass plays. The ability to move swiftly side-to-side will help lineman fortify the defensive line on outside plays and react to backdoor cuts.

Flexibility

Big defensive linemen needs to still have flexibility in the hips, knees, and ankles to change directions and stay in their gap. Being stiff or upright is a recipe for getting beaten consistently, so being smooth and bendy provides a massive advantage for all defensive linemen.

Burst

While stopping the run is usually the primarily goal of a defensive tackle, elite interior pass rushers are as valuable as any defensive role in football. Having a quick, powerful burst off the line of scrimmage will help with that. An explosive get-off allows defensive linemen to initiate contact and shoot through gaps.

Overall Opinion of the 2024 DT Class

It’s really tricky to label this defensive tackle group as being good or bad. Newton and Murphy at the top are a very solid prospects, but the class is almost exclusively made up of boom or bust prospects. Guys like Leonard Taylor, Maason Smith, and Michael Hall all have elite traits but a major lack of production to back it up. No matter how you rank these prospects on your personal draft board, you’ll probably be wrong. It’s just a very unpredictable group. Overall depth is a little below average as things will thin out significantly as day 3 goes on.
