Complete NFL Draft Rankings Promo

1. Troy Fautanu, Washington

LT/G | 6’4″ | 317 lbs | 5th Year

Troy Fautanu primarily played left tackle for Washington, and probably has enough length and quickness to stay there. His skillset will likely kick him inside at the NFL level, where he can better use his impressive lower body power. Fautanu is quick off the line of scrimmage and does a great job of opening big holes with his initial contact, while having enough fluidity in his lower body to redirect defenders and recover. He’s got decent length and plays very physically, and would likely have been a top-100 pick had he entered the draft last year.

He allowed a fair number of pressures to the outside and was susceptible to edges getting underneath him, but that’s not likely to be the case if he moves inside.

Troy Fautanu 2023 Stats

15 games: 15 starts (all at LT), 2 sacks allowed, 3 hits allowed, 18 hurries allowed, 96.3% pass block success rate

2. Christian Mahogany, Boston College

RG | 6’4″ | 314 lbs | 5th Year

Christian Mahogany is pure raw power at the right guard spot. He’s been on the NFL radar for quite some time now, but an injury caused him to miss all of 2022 and pass on the draft. Now that he’s finally in the draft, teams will be very excited to bring him in. Mahogany has a thick build that looks that part of an NFL lineman, with a strong core and anchor. His feet are much quicker than you’d expect for someone of his size, and he didn’t allow a single sack or QB hit this past season.

Despite better-than-expected quickness, Mahogany still isn’t going to be considered a great athlete by NFL standards, and still has to refine his hand placement and overall technique.

Christian Mahogany 2023 Stats

12 games: 12 starts (all at RG), 0 sacks allowed, 0 hits allowed, 7 hurries allowed, 98.3% pass block success rate

3. Cooper Beebe, Kansas State

LG/T | 6’3″ | 322 lbs | 5th Year

Cooper Beebe is a mauler offensive lineman who has played extensively at 3 positions while excelling for Kansas State. He’s a dominant run blocker who opens up big holes, but he’s also very comfortable as a pass blocker. He allowed 0 sacks while starting at left tackle in 2021, and allowed 0 sacks again after kicking inside in 2022. Beebe will definitely stay inside at the next level due to play style and length, but his success playing outside showcases his impressive technique. Beebe has incredibly strong hands and consistent hand placement, combined with an elite ability to anchor and reading defenses.

His athletic traits aren’t elite, but he has plenty of physical talent to dominate the interior.

Cooper Beebe 2023 Stats

13 games: 13 starts (all at LG), 2 sacks allowed, 0 hits allowed, 7 hurries allowed, 98.0% pass block success rate

4. Zak Zinter, Michigan

RG | 6’6″ | 309 lbs | 4th Year

Zak Zinter is part of the deepest offensive line in the country this year for Michigan, and you can tell he’s been coached up. Zinter plays with great balance against power rushers and is the definition of consistent. He has great size for an interior offensive lineman combined with nice length. Zinter keeps moving his feet during his blocks and rarely gets sloppy with his technique, while also showing a recognition of stunts and blitz packages. His athleticism is above average, but not what you would typically see for a 1st round guard.

He doesn’t consistently produce a huge push off the line of scrimmage, and might be pushed down the draft due to a nasty injury late in the season. But Zinter is just about a guarantee to be an NFL starter because of his tactician approach, frame, and experience.

Zak Zinter 2023 Stats

12 games: 12 starts (all at RG), 0 sacks allowed, 0 hits allowed, 5 hurries allowed, 98.3% pass block success rate

5. Christian Haynes, Connecticut

RG | 6’3″ | 317 lbs | 6th Year

Christian Haynes doesn’t always get the attention he deserves since he’s an offensive lineman playing for UConn, but his power and flexibility make him once of the best guards in the 2024 NFL Draft. Haynes has refined technique and plays like a 6th year player. He is stronger and quicker than his competition across from him, showing good knee bend and very quick feet for a 320 pound lineman. He routinely finishes blocks and shows a high football IQ.

Postseason workouts will be key for him to show he can produce against top NFL competition.

Christian Haynes 2023 Stats

12 games: 12 starts (all at RG), 1 sack allowed, 1 hit allowed, 10 hurries allowed, 97.3% pass block success rate

Traits That Make a Guard Prospect Great

There’s a lot more than goes in to scouting interior offensive linemen than most fans realize. Strength, flexibility in the hips/knees/ankles, and blocking technique are among some of the most important factors of scouting the top guard prospects.

Some of the factors we consider when scouting are included below.

Flexibility

Having flexibility in the hips, knees, and ankles is necessary to react to oncoming rushers and quickly recover. Being stiff or upright is a recipe for getting beaten consistently, so being smooth and bendy provides a massive advantage for all offensive linemen.

Quickness

Linemen rarely need to sprint 40 yards, but having quick feet is as important as any trait. While everyone thinks about linemen as mostly big, much of the play in the trenches is decided by footwork. If you don’t have the quickness to properly move your feet, you’re going to find yourself out of position.

Power

Generating power in the run game to open up holes, holding your base against massive nose tackles, and keeping your balance when passing off a block are just a few ways that power is important for a lineman. It isn’t all about bench reps, power is usually generated from the core and lower body.

Frame

Guard prospects are big. But not all 315 pounders carry their weight the same way. While an offensive tackle prospect requires length in his frame, and interior offensive lineman needs broad shoulders and thick legs to keep a powerful base and keep defenders in front of him.

Overall Opinion of the 2024 Guard Class

This group of guards is quietly one of the better groups in the 2024 NFL draft. A lot of my favorite prospects from last year’s draft opted to return for the 2023-2024 season, including top names like Cooper Beebe, Christian Haynes, Christian Mahogany, and Zak Zinter. Adding these guys into what was already a decent 2024 class makes it incredibly deep. Most NFL fan bases say their team needs help on the offensive line, and this year you could likely get a day 1 starter pretty late. The strength of this group will largely be determined by how many tackles fully commit to a transition to guard, such as Fautanu, Puni, etc.
