Complete NFL Draft Rankings Promo

1. Edgerrin Cooper, Texas A&M

LB | 6’2″ | 230 lbs | 4th Year

Edgerrin Cooper took a massive step forward in 2023, and was potentially the most dominating linebacker in college football this year. Cooper offers an elite combination of size and speed for the position, with long arms and a sturdy 6’3″ 230 pound frame. He trusted his instincts and got in the backfield constantly this year, showing schematic versatility that NFL coaches will love. He has the raw strength to finish tackles, triggers fast on run plays, and has shown a good overall feel for coverage.

If Cooper can continue to improve his coverage ability and prove he can stand his own against NFL tight ends, he could end up being a steal.

Edgerrin Cooper 2023 Stats

12 games: 84 tackles, 17.0 tackles for loss, 8.0 sacks, 2 passes defended, 2 fumbles forced

2. Junior Colson, Michigan

LB | 6’2″ | 238 lbs | 3rd Year

Colson looks the part of a prototypical NFL off-ball linebacker. With great size at 6’2″ 238 combined with ideal athletic ability and strength, Colson has the uncoachable traits needed to get top-50 consideration. On the field, he’s shown significant improvement with his angles and play recognition, while having natural tackling instincts. Colson rarely ever misses tackles thanks to his strength and form, while also showing solid coverage ability.

Scouts hoped to see him trigger faster to get into the backfield in 2023, but that didn’t really happen. Colson was dealing with injuries for much of the season, but still held his own quite nicely. He showed impressive toughness and quick feet en route to anchoring Michigan’s championship-level defense.

Junior Colson 2023 Stats

15 games: 95 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 0 sacks, 2 passes defended

3. Payton Wilson, NC State

LB | 6’4″ | 233 lbs | 6th Year

Payton Wilson has been on the NFL radar for a very, very long time. The 6th year linebacker has had a couple injuries, but has been mostly healthy over the past two years. He’s a multiple-time member of Bruce Feldman’s annual freak list thanks to his ridiculous testing numbers in a 6’4″ 235 pound frame. Wilson has a wrestling background that shows up in the way he attacks linemen and finishes tackles, and helped him to win the Butkus award for Most Outstanding Linebacker in 2023.

Wilson’s production also expands beyond his tackling, as he tallied 7 interceptions and 13 more passes broken up throughout his career. Despite his big frame and athleticism, what really prevents Wilson from getting a first round rating is his length. His short arms take away any advantages he gets from being 6’4″”, and limit his upside in terms of coverage.

Payton Wilson 2023 Stats

12 games: 138 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks, 9 passes defended, 3 interceptions, 1 fumble forced

4. Cedric Gray, North Carolina

LB | 6’2″ | 234 lbs | 4th Year

Cedric Gray was one of the most productive players in all of college football over the past two seasons, and would have had a chance to be a top-100 pick in last year’s draft had he entered. He decided to return for his 4th year of college football and get more attention. Gray is elite as a run stopper, with great instincts to shoot run gaps and range sideline to sideline. He’s also solid in coverage, closing quickly on his defender and allowing very limited YAC, while also successfully forcing 13 incompletions in the past two years.

Gray has a good frame and enough athleticism to translate his production to the next level, and has taken steps forward in terms of his pass rush ability. The biggest problem for him is if there’s anything he does great, not just good.

Cedric Gray 2023 Stats

12 games: 121 tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks, 5 passes defended, 1 interception

5. Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Clemson

LB | 6’0″ | 228 lbs | 3rd Year

Jeremiah Trotter is Mr. Reliable at the linebacker position for Clemson, showcasing a consistent and well-rounded game. He is on the small side for NFL linebackers, but likely has enough size to avoid any size-related red flags. Outside of size, it’s plus marks all around. Trotter is a solid athlete with a stout frame and decent length. He diagnoses plays fast and shows a high football IQ, while being an excellent tackler. Trotter is able to bend beneath blocks to get in the backfield, while also having fluid movement skills in coverage.

He won’t be able to get any bigger which might limit his ceiling a bit, but he’s ready to contribute at a high level for just about any NFL defense.

Jeremiah Trotter Jr. 2023 Stats

12 games: 88 tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, 7 passes defended, 2 interceptions, 2 fumbles forced

Traits That Make a LB Prospect Great

Inside linebackers are often called the quarterback of the defense, and need to make a ton of lightning quick reactions to play effectively. Closing speed, tackling, play recognition, and lateral quickness are among some of the most important factors of scouting the top linebacker prospects.

Some of the factors we consider when scouting are included below.

Closing Speed

When the play presents itself, the best linebackers will have the closing speed to get there in a flash. This speed doesn’t always translate to a great 40 time as it happens in slightly shorter bursts, but this burst is a must-have to get sideline to sideline.

Play Recognition

Even if you have great speed, if you don’t have the football IQ to recognize plays, you’re likely going to be late to your spots. Determining run versus pass, understanding route combinations, and identifying blocking concepts all fall into this category.

Lateral Quickness

Linebacker prospects need to be able to keep their eyes in the backfield while moving side to side and occupying the proper gaps. Having good lateral quickness and smooth feet will help them stay in good position and continually find themselves near the play.

Tackling

Hit power and tackling form are absolute necessities for linebackers. While tackling form can definitely be improved with coaching, most of the elite linebackers in college football are already advanced with their tackling form and have it come naturally to them.

Overall Opinion of the 2024 LB Class

Last year’s linebacker draft class was really weak, but this year seems to be a step in the right direction. There still isn’t a true superstar, but there are tons of productive players with good physical traits. A couple of players have a chance of sneaking into the end of the first round, but day 2 and early day 3 of the draft is when the linebackers should really shine.
