1. Joe Alt, Notre Dame

LT | 6’9″ | 321 lbs | 3rd Year

Joe Alt is a big, athletic tackle prospect with the all the traits to excel as a left tackle in the NFL. He was the rare prospect to start as a true freshman for Notre Dame’s always talented offensive line. Alt has a good get off from the line of scrimmage with nice flexibility and knee bend, capable of getting low and generating power as a run blocker or using his size and length in the pass game. He’s an intelligent and aware blocker who identifies stunts and blitzes, while having above average technique for someone of his age.

He’ll want to continue adding a bit more strength to improve against bull rushers who get in on his frame.

Joe Alt 2023 Stats

12 games: 12 starts (all at LT), 1 sack allowed, 2 hits allowed, 2 hurries allowed, 98.6% pass block success rate

2. Olu Fashanu, Penn State

LT | 6’6″ | 312 lbs | 4th Year

Olu Fashanu was a likely 1st round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft who surprised everyone when he decided to return to school. Fashanu has great traits for the position, being a solid lateral mover with quick feet, great length, and prototypical size. Entering the 2023 season he is yet to allow a single sack, although part of that is due to inexperience. Fashanu really flashes on tape, displaying really flexible hips and knees. He does a nice job of dropping his hips into blocks and using his strong hands to latch onto defenders.

There are a lot of traits to work with, he just needs some more playing time.

Olu Fashanu 2023 Stats

12 games: 12 starts (all at LT), 0 sacks allowed, 0 hits allowed, 10 hurries allowed, 97.3% pass block success rate

3. Taliese Fuaga, Oregon State

RT | 6’6″ | 324 lbs | 4th Year

Taliese Fuaga is a massive right tackle who is very light on his feet. At 6’6″ 325 pounds, you would expect a mauler when you see him. He’s plenty capable of using his strength, but his quickness for his size is what pushes him into the 1st round. Fuaga gets out of his stance fast, does a good job of keeping his feet under him, and has strong hands to engage the defensive lineman.

2023 has seen an increase in penalties for him, which is concerning, but he still has never given up a single sack in his career.

Taliese Fuaga 2023 Stats

12 games: 12 starts (all at RT), 0 sacks allowed, 2 hits allowed, 10 hurries allowed, 96.6% pass block success rate

4. Tyler Guyton, Oklahoma

RT | 6’8″ | 322 lbs | 4th Year

Tyler Guyton has been up and down throughout his career at Oklahoma, but his athleticism jumps off on tape. Guyton has extremely quick feet combined with excellent length and good play strength. He’s tailored made to be an elite pass protector in the NFL once he cleans up his technique. Guyton is still fairly raw with less than 20 career starts, but his twitchiness simply can’t be taught.

There aren’t many humans on the planet his size who can get off the line like him. Guyton also shows flexible hips and good knee bend, but needs to find ways to generate more power to open holes in the run game.

Tyler Guyton 2023 Stats

10 games: 9 starts (all at RT), 0 sacks allowed, 3 hits allowed, 9 hurries allowed, 96.6% pass block success rate

5. JC Latham, Alabama

RT | 6’6″ | 342 lbs | 3rd Year

JC Latham is a massive right tackle prospect with an NFL-ready frame and impressive athletic profile. He’s played right guard and right tackle in his career, with a combination of strength, length, and athleticism to play multiple positions. The former 5-star recruit played well in his first year as a starter in 2022, showing strong hands with powerful first contact and the ability to open big holes in the run game.

He needs to be more consistent with his technique and footwork, but has the impressive foot quickness and leverage to do so.

JC Latham 2023 Stats

14 games: 14 starts (all at RT), 2 sacks allowed, 3 hits allowed, 9 hurries allowed, 96.8% pass block success rate

Traits That Make an OT Prospect Great

Offensive tackle is a position that relies very heavily on physical traits. Players need to have the size and quickness to compete 1-on-1 with freak athletes off the edge. Length, flexibility in the hips/knees/ankles, and a good release are among some of the most important traits to identify top offensive tackle prospects.

Some of the factors we consider when scouting are included below.

Length

Offensive tackle draft rankings rely very heavily on length. Every year we see players who were elite at the college level, but are totally passed over by the NFL just because of their short arms. Having the length to compete 1-on-1 around the edge is a must-have, non-coachable trait.

Flexibility

Having flexibility in the hips, knees, and ankles is necessary to react to oncoming rushers and quickly recover. Being stiff or upright is a recipe for getting beaten consistently, so being smooth and bendy provides a massive advantage for all offensive linemen.

Quickness

Linemen rarely need to sprint 40 yards, but having quick feet is as important as any trait. While everyone thinks about linemen as mostly big, much of the play in the trenches is decided by footwork. If you don’t have the quickness to properly move your feet, you’re going to find yourself out of position.

Power

Generating power in the run game to open up holes, holding your base against massive nose tackles, and keeping your balance when passing off a block are just a few ways that power is important for a lineman. It isn’t all about bench reps, power is usually generated from the core and lower body.

Overall Opinion of the 2024 OT Class

The offensive tackle draft class looked average entering the season, but it has really developed into a great group. Joe Alt and Olu Fashanu make for a great tandem at the top of the class, and the late first round to 3rd round depth is developing very nicely. The group of tackles at the Senior Bowl may have been the deepest ever, and there’s some surprising size coming from mid-major schools to help the depth.
