Complete NFL Draft Rankings Promo

1. Jaden Hicks, Washington State

S | 6’2″ | 211 lbs | 3rd Year

Jaden Hicks is a quickly ascending player with great size and a very quick first step. Hicks is as fast as any safety in the class when he’s moving down hill, and has significantly improved his ability to diagnose plays. At 6’2″+ 210 pounds he has great size for the position with a strong build, but his athleticism is much more impressive than his frame. Hicks is a consistent tackler who is capable of big hits, and he plays all over the field.

He needs to continue improving his ability to diagnose plays and finish more interceptions this season. As just a 3rd year player, he’ll have plenty of time to improve.

Jaden Hicks 2023 Stats

12 games: 79 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 6 passes defended, 2 interceptions, 1 fumble forced

2. Tyler Nubin, Minnesota

S | 6’1″ | 199 lbs | 5th Year

Tyler Nubin is a strong, versatile safety who has been a key leader for a Gophers defense which has been among the nation’s best almost every year of his career. At 6’2″ with long arms, Nubin has the length to interfere with passing lanes. While he’s a solid all around athlete, he doesn’t have quite as much underneath foot quickness to defend in man as a slot safety. He’s better diagnosing plays from the backend or crashing against the run.

Nubin has great ball skills and reacts quickly to the QBs eyes to consistently disrupt plays, and he has the strong build necessary to be a run defender at the next level.

Tyler Nubin 2023 Stats

12 games: 53 tackles, 1.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, 9 passes defended, 5 interceptions, 4 passes defended, 1 fumble forced

3. Kamren Kinchens, Miami (FL)

S | 5’11” | 203 lbs | 3rd Year

Kamren Kinchens had a monster sophomore season in 2022, totaling 6 interceptions and 12 total passes defended. Sometimes for safeties these are just empty stats due to opportunity, but not for Kinchens. He doubled down in 2023, intercepting 5 more passes. He has the strength and aggressiveness to move down to the line of scrimmage and defend the run, while showing the coverage instinct and willingness to switch onto anyone.

While his size is nothing special, Kinchens offers an ideal mix of coverage and tackling ability. He accelerates into his hits and takes good angles into his pursuits. Subpar athleticism will almost certainly keep him out of the first round, but you can’t question the football instincts.

Kam Kinchens 2023 Stats

10 games: 59 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, 10 passes defended, 5 interceptions

4. Calen Bullock, USC

S | 6’2″ | 188 lbs | 3rd Year

Calen Bullock is a very long and wiry safety who could be the best in the class if he puts on some healthy weight. Bullock has great instincts in coverage, easily coming off his man and closing very fast to break up passes. He uses his length effectively and has quick feet to mirror offensive players. Bullock shows good instincts in run support as well, reading plays to get down from his safety spot and prevent big plays. His tackling still needs some work which isn’t surprising given his frame, but he has a great combination of speed and football IQ.

If he can add some serious strength, watch out.

Calen Bullock 2023 Stats

12 games: 63 tackles, 0.0 tackles for loss, 0.0 sacks, 9 passes defended, 2 interceptions

5. Cole Bishop, Utah

S | 6’2″ | 206 lbs | 3rd Year

Cole Bishop is a versatile safety who played the “fixer” role for the Utah Utes, he was the guy who took care of anything in front of him. Bishop has good size at 6’2″ 205 pounds, with impressive underneath quickness and an ability to work around blockers in the open field to erase potential big plays. Bishop’s ability to get in the backfield was obvious on film, but he impressed at the Senior Bowl with his coverage ability and again impressed by showing 4.45 speed at the combine.

Bishop does a good job of identifying plays and has the quick acceleration to close holes in the NFL. His size and strength allow him to hold his own against bigger tight ends, and he has seen an improvement in ball skills throughout his career.

Cole Bishop 2023 Stats

11 games: 60 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, 6 passes defended, 2 interceptions, 1 fumble forced

MORE NFL DRAFT RANKINGS

Traits That Make a Safety Prospect Great

Safety play puts a little more emphasis on instincts and reaction time than physical traits, but an ideal safety prospect excels in both aspects. Play recognition, coverage technique, and overall versatility are among some of the most important factors to consider when scouting the top safety prospects in the draft.

Some of the factors we consider when scouting are included below.

Play Recognition

Safeties play a lot of different roles, but the traditional responsibility is making sure no one gets over the top of the defense. Recognizing deep routes in time to prevent the big play, while also recognizing play action and run plays to stay in position is vital. If a safety misreads a situation, you’re vulnerable for a massive play.

Coverage Technique

Safety prospects need the ability to cover in zone or in off-man coverage. They’ll need to match up with receivers or tight end, and need decent coverage technique to stay with their man. Having some ball skills to swat a ball away or jump around for an interception is also a major benefit.

Quickness

Quickness is vital to successful coverage, getting down to the line of scrimmage on screens or run plays, and reacting to ball carriers in the open field. Safeties that are stiff in the hips or have slow feet will often find themselves out of position and likely be low in our safety rankings.

Tackling

When you have a chance to make a tackle, you need to make the tackle. The top rated safety prospects will rarely miss open field tackles, have decent hit power, and display reasonably good technique in their tackling form.

Overall Opinion of the 2024 Safety Class

This safety class isn’t looking too hot.  Every stage of the draft seems weaker than normal. No guaranteed 1st rounder, and not much value in the middle or late rounds. The middle rounds have a few potential gems depending on where they fall, but I imagine NFL teams have more disagreements about safety rankings than any other position this year.
